It was August 12, 2017, I have to catch my first train to a new journey of my life, but you and papa weren’t there to drop me off in Delhi because of some work. You told me, “Go and start your classes, we will come to meet you soon in September.” Sitting inside the train, seeing the bag full of foods you have sent with me, thinking about eighteen years where I wasn’t alone, where you were there to feed me, take care of me, help me in doing my chores. I felt a pain, pain of going away from you, the pain of not seeing you physically for months. But then life has to go on and you are always there in my heart.
I still remember, before going to Delhi, you always said, “Ghar khali ho jaega”, “Galti se me tumhare hisse ki daal na bana du.” It was fun listening to those things from you, but reaching Delhi and your absence somewhere broke me. “Udhar Ghar khali hua ya na hua ho, par tumhare bina ye naya ghar adhura sa tha.”
Sitting on the balcony with a cup of tea and thinking that you never allowed your three daughters to have a cup of tea, because “jyada peene se kaale ho jate hai,” Oh! Your myths Maa. It bought a big smile on my face.
However, it’s been three years now maa and waking up daily on the alarm, cleaning the flat, washing my clothes, making my own food is still so new to me. I still crave for your handmade foods. But all the appreciation goes to you, for making me a girl who can do all this in your absence, for making me a girl who can stand on her own feet. Thank you for teaching me how to cook, for giving me all those habits you have within you, for letting me realize that you don’t have to be dependent on anyone.
Today, whatever person I am, it’s just because of you, because of your lifelong teachings. Words are not enough to describe your sacrifice, love and care for us all.
Though I never expressed my love for you but I love you a lot! I know, thank you is not enough to appreciate you but then too, Thank You maa for everything you have ever done for us and for doing it till now. •
